Getting the balance right is a balancing act

Are you running a business while also trying to stay on top of your household, children, pets, engagements, school activities, not to mention your own health and wellbeing? Hey snap - us too! Especially the working mums, right? No disrespect to the men, we know you are working hard too.

We aren’t doctors, mental health workers, nor magicians, so won’t go as far as to even try to lecture you on the right or wrong way to do this. However, we do want to acknowledge that for many of us in our 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, this is a real thing that a lot of us struggle with daily. So in the hope of making someone smile today, we’ve outlined our 5 practical tips on how we might balance the whirlwind that is life.

  1. Find your tribe – your support crew who will cheer you on! Whether it’s seeing a friendly face at school pick up or perhaps having a professional helping more with the business, having the right people support and encourage you is key when times seem tough and overwhelming.

  2. Set your boundaries - there are only so many hours in the day, and you need to set boundaries you are comfortable with to manage business time vs. family time vs. you time. Once your boundaries have been set, make your expectations clear to those around you.

  3. Practice gratitude and be thankful - for the things you do have, rather than focusing on what you don’t. Worried about your business not growing at the pace you want it too? Or perhaps you are worried about getting to your son’s rugby game because the business has taken off with a hiss and a roar? No matter what your situation, try to count your blessings for the positive things happening in your life.

  4. Delegate or ask for help - do we really need to be rushing around trying to sort the laundry, while cooking dinner and spinning a plate on our head? Or could we reach out and ask for more help? Food for thought.

  5. And lastly, keep your stash of chocolate and wine handy! Never, and I repeat never, let your stash dwindle, as we all know this might well be the make-or-break of your sanity come 5pm.

Okay - and now we just need to practice what we preach!
